The Unofficial Ranking.
Here is the unofficial, unscientific ranking of three of the Top 4 consulting companies based on the performance of 5 or more of their employees at INSEAD.
(1) McKinsey
(2) BCG
(3) Bain
Booz Allen is not considered competition even by "Siemens management Consulting" and they seem to be getting a not an "as encouraging a response as the other three". Besides, if they are not spending atleast 200 K Euros in INSEAD sending their associates to our classes, they certainly don't belong in the league. I was surprised there are so many from McKinsey in the dean's list and none of them blog as far as I know (again unscientific google blog search of a few names yielded rien). So thats the ranking people.
Here are my theories about consultants
1. They are always cheerful and positive (Lets say thats the exterior)
2. They are analytical and smart.
3. They can learn Powerphrases and keywords faster than the average MBA
4. They can give you amazing stories on why joining Syngenta, Mittal Steel and Pop's soda are some of the best career moves after an exceptional career in one of the BIG three.
Wannabe - why would you even think I want to be a consultant. The INSEAD careerhunt (the expensive treasurehunt) has lead me to believe that I am a "doer" and will take industry jobs of "saving the world" and that too all by myself types. I have about six interviews (some second round, some first round) lined up next month and I am in the Salary negotiation phase in one. So things are still going well in my view and there are more jobs than INSEADers can handle. Thats my view.
About the Jan - July view in the comment. I disown it. I do agree that the internship can be a huuuuuge advantage if used effectively. But thats more for career changers. If you need more I can explain that more.

Have recently started blogging and looking up MBA school posts. Am deciding between INSEAD and Columbia from where I have admits. Will mostly take up INSEAD - the allure of a proper one-year program and a truly multi-national and multi-cultural setting is very high.

Dogmatrix, congratulations. Columbia is a fabulous school especially if you are either "banking oriented" and are a career changer into banking. Please note that if you are truly aspiring for a non-american or "global" career, you have made the right decision. If wall street is where you want to be please pick Columbia.

About P3, hi hi hi...I spent all my P3 attempting to schedule meetings with 6-7 different groups I was working on different courses on (half core, half electives)

I am very keen on a management/ strategy consulting career and have strong prior business consulting exp. (though not with top-4 strategy firms). Banking or Wall Str is not even a factor - I am not from from that area. I am focusing on consulting and industry (corp planning, bus dev, sales/ mktg). Also one year vs. 2 yrs is a big factor. Is getting a US job very difficult from INSEAD? I was working in the USA for the past 4 years, so will that have a bearing on US job search? I have worked in South Africa, Malaysia and the UK (London) too and am open to areas like UK especially.
Interesting...being as global as you are, you should not have a problem. Starting in January and getting an internship in the US is a great idea but not a must for a US job search. US jobs are too few on campus, it should come out of intensive search efforts on your own.
